Liu Zongli was born in 1915. His father is a well-known folk artist named Liu Zongyue laying "Japanese folk art" theoretical and aesthetic bases, so he was influenced by Japanese traditional folk craft objects’beauty since childhood; he also served as the assistant of the leading designer in the field of western modernism Charlotte Perriand(Perriand’s works include several joint designed sofas,lounge chairs and chairs that have become classic symbols of modernism with Corbusier ). Graduated from the Art Institute of Japan (now is the Tokyo National University of Art Music), he has studied in Junzo Sakakura Department of Architecture. In 1950, Liu Zongli founded the Yanagi Design Organization, where its designed furniture, home appliances and utensils constantly receive countless international awards for decades including the first place in the Japan Industrial Design Competition, gold prize in Italy Milan, as well as good design awards, the highest honor in Japanese industrial design field; and he persistently takes charge as the Craft Museum folk Japanese director since 1977. What the most captivating thing lies in Liu Zongli’s works is the perfect combination of the East and the west, traditional Japanese folk art and modern western thinking. The Japanese folk art and western modernism, at first their origins seem to have a thousands of miles’ distance away, but they all focus on pursuing the unification of external form and internal spirit.
